Diverse Cardiff - recruiting a Navigator to help people access mental health support

March 2022

Hi, my name is Michael Harvey – I’m one of the Heads of Service at Adferiad. I’ve had the great pleasure of managing the Bloom programme in Wales, which your fundraising supported. I’m delighted to have this opportunity to manage another project supported by LBG.

Through our Diverse Cardiff project, we want to support ethnic minority communities in Cardiff to access mental health services. While the crisis point of the pandemic is hopefully nearing an end, the combination of existing structural inequalities and the unequal economic and social impacts of the last two years mean that people whose mental health was at greatest risk prior to Covid-19 are likely to bear the brunt of the emergency longer term. This disproportionately affects the most marginalised groups in society, including those from ethnic minority communities.

We have based the project in Riverside – one of the most diverse areas of Cardiff – as we feel this will create the greatest impact. We will shortly be appointing a Social Navigator, whose role is to engage with the community in Riverside, and develop a network of support specifically for Black, Asian and minority communities in Cardiff. The Navigator will play a key role in supporting individuals to access mental health support based on their needs.

In my next update, I hope to introduce you to the new Navigator and the work they are doing.
