Mental Health UK’s new strategy for 2026-2031: Our plan for a mentally healthier and thriving UK

In this blog, our Chief Executive Brian Dow explains how Mental Health UK will help build good mental health and unlock the nation’s potential, in the face of ever-growing and increasingly complex threats to our wellbeing.

Across the UK, many people are feeling the strain of a world that’s shifting faster than they can keep up with. Rising living costs, pressure at work and school, and the struggle to access the right support are becoming everyday realities. These pressures don’t just sit in the background but shape our wellbeing and curb our potential on a daily basis.

At Mental Health UK, we hear stories everyday which reveal a troubling pattern. The teenager overwhelmed by anxiety while trying to keep up with lessons. A parent juggling caring responsibilities and money worries. Someone forced out of the workplace because their mental health needs weren’t understood. The common thread is that all have been trying to navigate incredibly difficult situations with little to no support.

Our 2026-2031 strategy is a direct response to the upswell of pressures that people are facing.

We will build on our history of innovation, seeking to expand and deepen our reach to even more people, ensuring they have the tools they need not just to survive, but to thrive.

Our approach has always been rooted in real life. We listen closely to people’s lived experiences, work alongside communities, and partner with frontline services who understand the challenges on the ground. That combination of compassion and practicality guides everything we do.

And with our help, we see how people are able to find a path forward. It’s the moment that someone gets one-on-one advice that helps them stabilise their finances, finds a programme that rebuilds their confidence, or meets a peer who understands what they’re going through. Support that, when it arrives at the right time, can drastically alter a person’s direction in life for the better.

No single organisation can solve the UK’s mental health challenge. Real change takes collective effort. That’s why the alliance behind our charity, made up of Rethink Mental Illness (England), Adferiad (Wales), Change Mental Health (Scotland) and MindWise (Northern Ireland), is so important. Together, we combine deep community knowledge with national reach, enabling us to identify issues early and amplify solutions that work.

But we need partners around the table. Funders, employers, policy-makers and people with lived experience all have a crucial role to play. When we work together, we can strengthen services, co-create new ideas and make sure support reaches the people who need it most.

Good mental health is not just about individual wellbeing. It shapes our communities, our economy, and the future of the UK. If we ignore the growing challenges that people are facing, the cost will be felt by us all.

Our new strategy is a commitment to act with urgency and with heart. It’s about building a UK where support is easier to find, earlier to access, and more attuned to the realities people live in.

We’re ready to push forward, and we hope you’ll join us.
