Share your story
Personal narratives have the power to transform perceptions, challenge stigmas, and create meaningful connections. By opening up about our mental health journeys, we can highlight the diverse experiences of those navigating psychological challenges, and encourage others to reach out for support. The process of reflection and sharing can also be a crucial part of healing, self-discovery and empowerment.

1 in 4 adults in the UK will experience a mental health problem every year.
Everyone's story is unique
Sharing our experiences with others starts conversations and can help end stigma.
Sharing your experience can:
- Inspire others who may feel isolated
- Challenge misconceptions about mental health
- Contribute to a more compassionate understanding
- Support your own and other people’s healing journey
We always like to hear from people with lived experience of mental health issues, especially if you have accessed support from Mental Health UK. Whether you’ve accessed our online help and information, received money advice from us, taken part in one of our young people’s programmes, or benefitted from our employment support – we’d love you to get in touch.
We are really grateful to you for sharing your story. We receive a high number of requests and may not be able to respond to all of them, but we will contact you to let you know if we are going to take your story forwards.

How do we support you with sharing your story?
Exploring our personal experiences and sharing your story is deeply personal and takes courage.
We want you to share your experience as comfortably as possible. It may be useful to think about how much you’re happy to share with the public and how much you’d rather keep private; if you’re happy to publish under your own first name or a pseudonym. Thinking about your boundaries will make sharing your story a positive, safe and healing experience.
If you’d like to withdraw your personal story at any point, please let us know and we will act accordingly.
We will support you throughout this process by ensuring we:
- never share your story without your consent (if under 18, we require a parent/guardian’s consent)
- provide you with support throughout capturing your story
- withhold identifiable details to ensure your anonymity should you request it.
How do we refine your story?
In order to ensure every story is clear and readable, we may edit your story. We will involve you in this process and ensure you have approved the final version to be published. Also, we are mindful of the impact of reading stories on others, so we may modify the copy in the following ways:
- we avoid where possible copy that might be triggering for others
- we don’t describe suicide or self-harm methods
- we don’t express political or religious viewpoints
- we don’t include derogatory comments that are unkind or demeaning.
Submissions you share will be in line with our Privacy policy and full consent confirmed prior to publishing.
