Richard Whitehead MBE joins Mental Health UK as Ambassador

Mental Health UK is delighted to welcome Paralympic champion and world record holding marathon runner Richard Whitehead MBE as a new Ambassador.

Sport, inclusion and mental health

Born with a double through knee congenital amputation, Richard has spent his life challenging perceptions of disability and showing what can be achieved when people are given the opportunity to thrive. His sporting career includes Paralympic gold at London 2012, multiple world records, and more than 100 marathons completed around the world.

Alongside his achievements on the track and road, Richard is a passionate advocate for inclusion, accessibility and community. Through The Richard Whitehead Foundation, he works to remove barriers so that disabled people can access sport and physical activity, helping them build confidence and connect with others in safe spaces.

Shared mission with Mental Health UK

Richard’s commitment to empowering others aligns closely with our work as a charity to champion the UK’s mental health, tackling the barriers that hold people back and providing practical tools and support to help them thrive at home, at school, and at work.

“I’m incredibly proud to join the Mental Health UK team as their new Ambassador. I believe deeply in the power of sport and movement to transform lives, not just physically, but emotionally and for our wellbeing and mental resilience.

We all have a role to play in creating communities that lift people up, unlock potential, and provide safe, positive, and supportive spaces for everyone.

I'm looking forward to helping to raise awareness, remove barriers and ensure everyone is given the opportunity to thrive."
