Tasha’s story

After graduating from university, Tasha found it difficult to find work in a challenging job market. With Into Work’s support, she is feeling more hopeful about what the future holds.

"I’m more optimistic about my job search than I was before.I’ve learnt that I can’t take the difficulties of today’s job market as a reflection of my skills."

My experience of unemployment

I graduated with a 2:1 in architecture in 2025 and have been looking for work since. The current job market is brutal. Even applying for retail, hospitality work and customer service roles, for which I have plenty of experience, I’ve not had much luck. I’m still trying to figure out the direction I’d like to take in my career.

The lack of financial freedom I’ve had whilst looking for work has definitely contributed to feelings of depression and anxiety.

Tasha

I’d never expected to spend so long unemployed after going to grammar school and university.

I felt a lot of disappointment in myself when comparing my situation to my peers.

How Into Work supported me

I joined Universal Credit in January 2026 and was able to access Mental Health UK’s Into Work programme through a work event put on by the Jobcentre Plus. My time spent on this employment programme, working mainly with Raj, has supported me greatly. We’ve spent time speaking about my interests, and she is consistently updating me with job postings that match my skills.

At the Jobcentre, I wasn’t able to get this kind of person-centred support, and I felt I was only being pushed into very generic roles. Working with Raj has allowed me to explore more opportunities. Raj has also been supporting me with writing and tailoring my CV, even referring me to another colleague to help me with writing cover letters.

I feel that Raj truly sees my potential and has been continually assisting me since I joined. A particular challenge I’ve faced is feeling overwhelmed by the high volume of job applications and the pressure to apply as early as I can.

One afternoon, Raj called me after walking past a job advert, and I immediately applied! Further down the line, I landed an interview with them. Raj’s dedication and fast action allowed me that opportunity.

Hope for the future

Since accessing Into Work, I don’t feel as alone or hopeless. Trying to search for work alone felt like an uphill battle, and Raj’s help has relieved that stress quite a lot.

I’d say that I’m more optimistic about my job search than I was before. I’ve learnt that I can’t take the difficulties of today’s job market as a reflection of my skills. I must keep reminding myself that I am talented and I do have value to bring. I just need to keep my head up, keep tailoring CVs, keep calling employers and keep applying!
