Causes of schizoaffective disorder

Schizoaffective disorder doesn’t have one clear cause, however if you have the condition there will be a chemical imbalance in your brain. Research has shown that genetic and environmental factors can increase your risk of developing the illness.

  • Genetics – Schizoaffective disorder is more likely to develop if other members of your family have schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder or bipolar disorder
  • Environment – Stress can contribute to a schizoaffective episode. Childhood trauma is shown to make the development of the condition more likely
