Personality disorder diagnosis

If you are experiencing mental health problems, it’s always best to visit your GP first. If they think you may have a personality disorder, they will need to refer you to a psychiatrist who can give you a full assessment and diagnosis. They will ask your questions about your life, your behaviours and your emotions.

Personality disorders can be difficult to diagnose because the symptoms are often very similar to other mental health conditions. The symptoms are also very broad, which makes personality disorders complex to understand.

If you use drugs or alcohol it can be difficult for health professionals to reach a correct diagnosis.
